World Mental Health Day (WMHD) started in 1992 and this year it took place on Thursday 10th October. It is a day primarily for promoting awareness, education and the reduction of stigma surrounding mental health. At Express Vending, we took the opportunity to give back to our staff and dedicate a day to focusing on wellbeing.
The theme for this year, as chosen by the World Federation for Mental Health, was suicide prevention. In recent news articles, it has been documented that suicide rates are rising year on year, to a worryingly high volume. According to the WHO, more than 800,000 people die by suicide a year, making it the principal cause of death among people fifteen to twenty-nine years old. All actions taken should therefore be aimed at prevention.
The World Federation for Mental Health have fully advocated the sharing of their campaign logo, to continually give individuals access to the information they need. Especially on the work that is being conducted and to show what is available for those who are struggling.
At Express Vending we thought, what can we do for our staff?
For our WMHD we chose to partner with the Wellbeing People to host a series of sessions, that were free for staff, to promote wellbeing through education and mindfulness, a form of guided meditation. The provision of such sessions and accompanying literature continue to show our staff not only that they are valued and cared for, but provides them with the education of where they can go, should they need additional support.
It gave staff practical and simple techniques that can be implemented at any time to maintain a positive mental health and wellbeing. We must thank the Wellbeing People for running excellent sessions.
The response in our office was amazing, as it always is and we will continue to support Mental Health charities where possible. We are proud to announce that we have chosen MIND Hertfordshire as our new charity partner and will be working closely with them on events, fundraising and donations.
